Briand's OT Game-Winner Runs Women's Hockey's Streak To Three

GORHAM, MaineAimee Briand's game-winning goal with fewer than three minutes remaining in the overtime period pushed the Castleton University women's ice hockey team past the Southern Maine Huskies – 3-2 – on Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

Castleton improves to 7-12-3 overall and moves to 7-4-2 in the New England Hockey Conference while picking up its third-straight winning effort. Southern Maine falls to 7-10-6 and 4-6-4 in the league.

Just over 30 seconds after a Castleton penalty shut down the Spartan power play opportunity and made it a four-on-four situation; Briand ripped a point-blank wrister past the Southern Maine netminder for the sudden-victory score. It was the Barrington, N.H. native's sixth score of the campaign and one of just two shots taken by the Spartans in the extra period. Co-captain Jade Remillard assisted on the tally, picking up her ninth of the season.

Midway through the second period and trailing 1-0 – following a Southern Maine score with 32 seconds remaining in the opening frame – Casey Traill corralled a loose puck and fired from just inside the blue line. The unassisted score was her second of 2018-19 and her seventh point.

The Spartans would not trail again after netting the equalizer, surging ahead just over five minutes later. Jocelyn Forrest notched her team-leading 12th goal of the season with help from Bre Babiarz who earned her second assist.

Southern Maine answered with an equalizer of its own as Brianna Doty put the puck past Castleton's goalie with help from Jill Hanigan in the 20th minute of the second period.

Rylie Wills earned her third-straight winning decision in goal, moving to 5-6-2 on the season. The Sioux Lookout, Ontario native made 16 saves in the win, playing all 63 minutes and 35 seconds of game time.

Both the Spartans and Huskies were sent to the sin bin on numerous occasions with the teams tallying six and eight penalties, respectively. Southern Maine also notched a power play score.

Castleton will return to action on short rest as the Spartans face New England College at 7 p.m. on Monday in a conference contest that was originally scheduled for Jan. 19.
