Briand's Breakaway Goal Leads Women's Hockey To 1-0 Victory

RUTLAND, Vt. – Breaking away from the defense, Aimee Briand netted the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Castleton University women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Friday evening at Spartan Arena.

Castleton improves to 3-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in New England Hockey Conference action, while Johnson & Wales falls to 2-7-2 and 1-5-1.

Starting the string of events that led to the goal, Casey Traill corralled the puck, sending it up toward the boards. Cutting across, Jocelyn Forrest crashed the boards, kicking the puck out to Briand. The latter took it the rest of the way, weaving through the defense and scoring on the goaltender's right. It was Briand's first score of the season and helped break a scoreless tie through the first 42-plus minutes of action.

Rylie Wills was impressive once again between the pipes as she posted her second career shutout and first of the season. The senior netminder sent aside all 29 shots that she faced and withstood six opposing power-play opportunities.

Offensively, Courtney Gauthier and Ali Stevens led the Spartans with five shots apiece. The first line of Briand (3), Forrest (3) and Jade Remillard (4) tallied 10 more attempts on-goal.

In the faceoff category, Briand led the way with 15 wins versus seven losses. Meanwhile, Bre Babiarz was impressive in her limited chances, going 7-for-9.

Women's ice hockey returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as Castleton travels to Henniker, N.H. and Lee Clement Arena for an NEHC matchup with the New England College Pilgrims.
