MARSHFIELD, Mass. - The Castleton University women's ice hockey team has been ranked fourth in the 2018-19 New England Hockey Conference's (NEHC) Preseason Coaches Poll, as released by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
Castleton returns the majority of its 2017-18 roster, replacing its two graduating players with a pair of freshmen. Last year's team made a run to the NEHC semifinals before falling 3-2 to eventual-runner-up UMass Boston.
Standing alone at the top of the rankings with all nine first-place votes and 81 total points is the defending NCAA Division III National Champion Norwich University. Following behind the Cadets in second and third, respectively, is UMass Boston (69) and Plymouth State (57).
The Spartans (54) and newcomer Suffolk University (45) round out the top 5. Two other fresh faces to the NEHC - Johnson & Wales (33) and Salem State (26), respectively - sandwich Southern Maine (28) who sits at seventh. New England College (12) completes the nine-team poll.
Castleton begins conference play at 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 as it hosts Salem State. The Spartans downed the Vikings 1-0 in nonconference play in last season's WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational opener.
