CASTLETON, Vt. – Hosting New England Hockey Conference quarterfinal action for the third consecutive year, the Castleton University women's ice hockey has been tabbed the three-seed to start the league tournament. The Spartans will face the No. 6 the University of Southern Maine in a rematch of the regular-season finale from a week ago.
During that game, Castleton picked up a goal in the first period before blowing the contest open in the middle frame. Three scores by Chanel Tvergyak, Ali Stevens and Maeghan Vasile, respectively, followed up Lisa Kilroy's first-period score.
Between the pipes, Alexis Kalm picked up her record-breaking fifth shutout of the 2017-18 season against Southern Maine. Following a slow start to the season, Kalm has been close to unconscious over her past 12 appearances. To this point the sophomore has a .918 save percentage and a 2.23 goals-against average.
Earlier in the season, the Spartans picked up a 4-1 victory and paired with their 4-0 win from last weekend, earned the season series sweep over the Huskies.
Leading offensively for Southern Maine are Julia Ormsby and Rylie Binette. The junior (13) and freshman (11), respectively, have combined (24) for nearly one-third of the team's 70 points scored.
Defensively, Whitney Padgett and Britney Evangelista have split time in the goal with the latter putting up a higher save percentage, while Padgett has a lower goals-against average.
