RUTLAND, Vt. – Led by an early Aimee Briand goal and an absolutely dominating performance in goal by Alexis Kalm, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team defeated the Manhattanville College Valiants 1-0 in the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational championship contest.
It is the first time the women's ice hockey team has won the annual tournament during its nine-year history. Castleton improves to 6-6-1 on the season, while Manhattanville falls to 5-4-1.
Characterizing both sides of play throughout the 60 minutes was impressive goaltending. Castleton's Kalm was unconscious for much of the contest, stopping each and every shot sent her way. Multiple times during the second and third frames, Kalm survived an onslaught of shots, often three or four at a time. The Aberdeen, N.C. native stayed composed and remained a brick wall between the pipes.
Early in the first period with Castleton cycling the puck through its offensive zone, Hannah Rose corralled the puck at the far right point and fired. Following a save from Manhattanville's Rose Pijaca, Ali Stevens slipped it through to Aimee Briand who ripped the puck inside in the left pipe.
Kalm finished with 22 saves while collecting her first shutout of the season. Pijaca made 15 saves on 16 shots in the loss.
Both the Valiants (2-2) and Spartans (3-3) were perfect on the penalty kill during the contest.
In the faceoff battle, Briand paced Castleton with 10 wins, while Jocelyn Forrest was second with six victories. For Manhattanville, Sarah Sinning collected 10 wins, followed by Melissa Stys with eight.
Castleton returns to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to face previously-vote-receiving Morrisville State in a nonconference contest.
