RUTLAND, Vt. – Williams College scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to hold a wire-to-wire 3-1 victory over the Castleton University women's ice hockey team on Wednesday evening at Spartan Arena.
Skating out to an early lead with less than three minutes off the clock, Williams' Hallie Whitmore scored her first goal of the season off an Amanda Reisman feed. Whitmore crossed in front of the goal and flicked the puck into the upper right 90 after Reisman sent it in front from the left side.
Following suit, Anna Fucillo notched her second score of the season after driving down the near side. Fucillo and Spartan goalie Alexis Kalm collided as the puck was leaving the skaters' stick and it snuck around the pads.
The early scoring did not hold up, though, as Castleton hunkered down and put on a strong display of defense through the second and third frames. Kalm was solid between the pipes, makes 17 saves for a total of 22.
William's Abby Brustad tallied an empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining, ripping a shot that tipped off Castleton's Hannah Rose. The puck deflected up and over the defender and into the net. Rose blocked another shot on the prior possession, which would have been another score.
Casey Traill tallied the lone Spartan goal during the game with 20 seconds remaining. Off a pass from Jade Remillard on an odd-man rush, Traill broke away and put it past the Eph's goalie Marissa Anderson. The latter made 15 saves.
Castleton earned the win in the faceoff battle, collecting 29-of-52 possible puck drops. Aimee Briand led the Spartans with 17 faceoff wins. Elsewhere, both teams went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Women's ice hockey returns to action for a 3 p.m. road contest at No. 7/7 Middlebury College on Saturday.
