Women's Ice Hockey Falls In OT Battle With Franklin Pierce

RUTLAND, Vt. – Hampered by penalties, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime contest against Division II Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday evening at Spartan Arena.

The Spartans fall to 4-4-1 overall, while the Ravens improve to 4-6-0.

On the power play, just 59 seconds into overtime, Franklin Pierce's Marissa Massaro rocketed the puck past Castleton goalie Rylie Wills on the right side for the game winner. With Wills looking behind the net at Delaney Guimon, the latter passed it around the pipe to an in-stride Massaro.

Castleton jumped out to the early lead with a Chanel Tvergyak score just past the mid-point of the first period. Aimee Briand and Hannah Rose assisted her on the effort. Tvergyak helped the Spartans take advantage of the extra-man opportunity by lacing the puck from the back right, just inside the blue line.

Quickly tying it up at 1-1, Franklin Pierce's Kelsey Ryan notched a power play goal of her own right in front of the net off a Massaro feed. Following a stalemate in the second, the Ravens took a momentary 2-1 lead as Nicole Amato slapped the puck in.

In her 100th career game, Lisa Kilroy returned the game back to even, tallying the equalizer at the 8:12 mark of the third. During the 4-on-4 action – Katie Neuburger and Briand were sent to the box for coincidental roughing penalties – Kilroy broke loose from the defense, skated right and flicked the puck left, catching the netting inside the upper left 90.

Six Spartans were sent to the sin bin for seven infractions, creating several opportunities for the Ravens. Castleton's penalty kill unit was able to neutralize four of the six extra-man chances.

Wills was tagged with the loss in 60:59 of playing time, allowing all three goals, while making 24 saves. Raven's goalie, Madison Murray collected 12 saves in the win.

Castleton heads on a two-week break and returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6 to host Williams College in a nonconference matchup.
