RUTLAND, Vt. – Wrapping up the first third of the 2017-18 campaign, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team will host Franklin Pierce University in a nonconference matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Spartans are led by senior captain Hannah Rose, who has tallied 11 points thus far, consisting of three goals and eight assists. She is third in the New England Hockey Conference in assists, sixth in points scored and first in defensemen scoring.
Aimee Briand (9) and Ali Stevens (8) anchor Castleton's offensive output, having notched 17 points combined through the first eight games of the season. Briand has scored six goals and dished out three helpers as well scored three game-winning goals, which is tops in the conference. Meanwhile, Stevens has contributed four goals and four assists.
Last time out, Castleton defeated the University of Southern Maine – 4-1 – in a conference matchup. After falling behind early, Jocelyn Forrest tied it up in the opening minutes of the second period. She then assisted Rose on the eventual game-winning score before tallying another helper on the team's third goal – scored by Nicolle Trivino. For good measure, Lisa Kilroy sent the puck into the net with just 1:22 remaining in regulation.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the final period of regulation, Franklin Pierce battled back to tie the game at three in its last contest. With 38 seconds remaining in play and a Raven in the penalty box, Sacred Heart capitalized to clinch a 4-3 victory.
Alex Brolsma leads Franklin Pierce in goals (6) and points (10) to this point, while Haley Parker and Carolyn Drowne share the tops in assists with five, each.
Next, up for Castleton, the Spartans will have a two-week hiatus before hosting Williams College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Meanwhile, Franklin Pierce breaks for the holiday and then heads to Morrisville State in a pair of nonconference battles against the former-vote-receiving Mustangs.
