NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Castleton University women's ice hockey team dropped a 9-0 contest against No. 1/1 Norwich University on Tuesday evening at Kreitzberg Arena. Castleton falls to 3-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the New England Hockey Conference, while Norwich stays unscathed, improving to 6-0-1 and 4-0-0.
Following a Castleton win in the opening faceoff, Norwich exploded offensively, surging to a 2-0 lead with just one minute gone. Moments later, the top-ranked Cadets opened a 4-0 advantage.
The Spartans went 5-for-7 on the penalty kill throughout the contest, keeping Norwich from fully capitalizing. Castleton also won 16 faceoffs and had a combined 20 blocked shots as a team.
In the goal, Alexis Kalm took the loss, allowing four goals in 20 minutes of action, while making eight saves. Rylie Wills entered the game in the second before eventually playing the final 40 minutes between the pipes. She made 20 saves.
Norwich added four more goals in the second period before scoring one in the game's final stanza.
Castleton returns to action for a weekend conference slate at Spartan Arena, beginning with the University of New England at 4 p.m. on Friday.
