CASTLETON, Vt. – Continuing New England Hockey Conference play, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team welcomes Plymouth State University on Saturday for weekend action after unforeseen circumstances caused the contest between Castleton and New England College -- originally scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on Friday -- to be postponed.
Most recently, Castleton (2-2-0, 1-1-0 NEHC) dropped a 6-3 contest at the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday to suffer its first NEHC loss of the year. The Spartans started the game by jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one period of play.
Casey Traill notched the second goal of her young career just 17 seconds into the contest to put Castleton up 1-0. Shooting from near the blue line, the freshman received passes from Ali Stevens and Aimee Briand before rocketing one past the goalie.
About 12 minutes later, Briand extended the lead to 2-0 off a Chanel Tvergyak assist. She took the puck near mid-ice, across the blue line and fired the puck in. For the third goal of the period, Hannah Rose notched the first goal of her 2017-18 campaign at the 13:30 mark.
The reigning NEHC Player of the Week, Briand, leads the team with four goals and is tied for the top spot in the conference, as well. Meanwhile, Rose leads the Spartans with five assists.
Following a Friday bout with No. 2/2 Norwich, Plymouth State (1-1-1, 1-0-1 NEHC) will come to Spartan Arena. During their last game, the Panthers skated to a 1-1 overtime tie with the University of New England.
Taylor Jackson tallied Plymouth State's one goal, shorthanded, at 11:08 in the second period to tie the contest. Emelie Lindqvist made 27 saves throughout to keep the Panthers and Nor'Easters tied.
Castleton returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday to play the nationally-ranked Cadets of Norwich University at the Kreitzberg Arena.
