CASTLETON, Vt. – Coming off a split in their opening weekend, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team enters the first New England Hockey Conference contests of the season on Friday. The Spartans head south for a weekend double at Salve Regina University – 7 p.m. – on Friday and the University of Massachusetts Boston – 2 p.m. – on Saturday.
Last time out, Castleton dropped a 3-2-overtime contest at Oswego State on Saturday. The Lakers are receiving votes in the latest d3hockey.com and USCHO.com national polls.
Nicolle Trivino scored the game-tying goal with just 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation as she finished a barrage of Castleton shots on goal with one that flipped up and over the Laker goalies' shoulder.
Earlier, Ali Stevens scored Castleton's first goal on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Lisa Kilroy dealt the final pass to Stevens who put it past the goaltender. The latter notched three points on two goals and an assist in her first two career games and earned NEHC Rookie of the Week.
Alexis Kalm turned in an impressive performance, channelling a herculean effort to keep the Spartans in the game long enough for them to come back, tie the game and send it to overtime. The Aberdeen, N.C. native made 36 saves on the way to NEHC Co-Goalie of the Week honors and a HERO Sports Goalie of the Week nomination.
Salve Regina comes into the contest after losing its first two games of the season against William Smith College. Following a 4-0 loss in their season opener, the Seahawks were shutout again by the Herons on Saturday by a score of 9-0. Goalie Jennifer O'Connell made 109 saves between the two games, including 60 in the weekend's first game.
UMass Boston is 0-1 currently after suffering a 4-0 loss to St. Anselm College in its season opener on Saturday. Rachel Myette notched 47 saves in the loss. The Beacons will play No. 3/3 Norwich University at 4 p.m. on Friday before the Spartans visit.
Last year, Castleton defeated both Salve Regina and UMass Boston by scores of 2-1. Against the Seahawks, Hannah Rose and Jade Remillard scored, while versus the Beacons, Lisa Kilroy and Chanel Tvergyak collected the goals.
Castleton returns to Spartan Arena on Friday, Nov. 10 for a 7 p.m. NEHC contest against New England College.
