RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton University women's ice hockey team exploded for a season-high seven goals, including five in the third period, to defeat visiting SUNY Canton, 7-1, in the consolation matchup of the Rutland Herald Invitational (RHI) Sunday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
The win halts a four-game losing skid for the Spartans, as they improve to 4-8-0 on the season, while the Kangaroos drop to .500 at 6-6-0 overall following the loss.
11 different Spartans tallied points on the afternoon, with six players recording two points. Hannah Rose led the way with two goals, while Aimee Briand and Felicia Bjalvegord each registered a pair of assists. Chanel Tvergyak and Ashley Pelkey split their two points on a goal and an assist each. Rylie Wills was impressive in net for the Spartans, making 24 saves to earn her first win of the season.
Tess Adams recorded the lone goal for the Kangaroos, with assists from Jessica Pele and Tessa Dobson. Illie Berisha, earning an All-Tournament spot after collecting 77 total saves in the tournament, tallied 30 saves on the afternoon, before being relieved by Brook Susac in the third period. Susac made 10 saves on 12 shots down the stretch for SUNY Canton.
With the score 2-1 and the game still well in tact after two periods, Castleton hit its stride and elevated its game in a hurry over the final 20 minutes. Bre Babiarz started the furious attack by winning the opening third period face-off directly to Jocelyn Forrest on the right wing. Forrest took care of the rest, skating inside the Kangaroos' zone and ripping a wrist shot from the far circle over Berisha's blocker to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead just seven seconds into the period.
After Pelkey netted her third goal of the season at the 4:05 mark, the Spartans rattled off two more goals just over one minute apart. Ally Brandland came first with a power-play goal on assists from Sabrina Hosner and Tvergyak at 6:01, before Rose drilled her second goal of the game on a point-blank shot from the slot at the 7:14 mark to give the Spartans a commanding 6-1 lead nearly midway through the final frame.
Freshman Nicolle Trivino delivered the final punch at 17:31 of the period, slipping one through the five-hole at the 17:31 mark as the Spartans played well down the stretch to earn the 7-1 victory.
Despite six consecutive penalties in the first period, Castleton came away with a 1-0 lead heading into the first period intermission. Tvergyak, named to the RHI All-Tournament Team, hammered a slap shot from the point that lifted top shelf just inside the cross bar at 3:59 to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in a contest they never trailed in. Both teams shared one goal apiece in the second period as Adams notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the Roos on a tic-tac-toe play from Pele and Dobson.
The Spartans responded to re-take the lead they would not relinquish again, when Rose finished a wrist shot top corner on assists from Pelkey and Briand at 15:17 of the second.
SUNY Canton finished the contest 1-for-9 on the power-play, while Castleton earned a goal on four tries with the power-play.
The Spartans will rest up quickly before traveling to Connecticut College for a matchup against the No. 7/8 Camels on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
