Women's Basketball Sweeps Season Series with Keene State

CASTLETON, Vt. – Three players tallied double-digit point totals for the Castleton University women's basketball team as the Spartans took down Keene State on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 50-38 in Little East Conference action at Glenbrook Gym.

Katlyn Toomey posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds to help Castleton improve to 14-8 overall and 6-7 in Little East play. Brooke Raiche scored a game-high 14 points with seven rebounds of her own, while Alexis Quenneville knocked down 3-of-6 from three on her way to 13 points. Abbie Lesure chipped in with five points and five assists on the day. Lesure was honored alongside teammate Ajla Medic prior to the game as the two seniors competed in one of their final home contests donning a Spartan uniform.

Keene State dropped to 3-18 with the loss, including a 1-12 mark in LEC play. The Owls were led offensively by Lilly Shlimon, who scored 13 points with a game-high 15 rebounds. Abby Thut added 10 points in 25 minutes off the bench for the Owls.

Castleton shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the floor on the day, including 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from three. The Owls struggled from long range, knocking down just 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) attempts beyond the arc, while making 13-of-44 (29.5 percent) overall. Both teams shot better than 80 percent from the free throw line on the day while turning the ball over more than 20 times apiece.

Both offenses struggled out of the gates, as the game was scoreless for the opening two minutes of play. Keene State got the game's first bucket on a layup from Jordyn Burke, before Toomey converted on a three-point play to give Castleton a 3-2 lead. With the Spartans leading 8-5 with 3:33 to play, Keene State went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and carry an 11-8 lead into the second.

Castleton opened the second stanza with back-to-back buckets to regain the lead, 12-11, but a 6-2 run by the Owls pushed the visitors' lead back to four points, 18-14. A pair of late free throws by Lesure cut the gap to two points, 20-18, heading into the halftime break.

Castleton opened the second half on a 6-0 run to jump out to a 24-20 lead, and never trailed again. The Spartans opened up an 11-point lead by the end of the third quarter thanks to a 7-0 run that included back-to-back threes by Raiche.

The final frame was a tight battle, but the Spartans' large cushion was enough to hold off the Owls for a 12-point victory as neither team strung together more than four points consecutively throughout the final frame.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
