CASTLETON, Vt. –Jamie Boyle hit a grand slam in the first inning to put the Castleton University softball team on top early as it completed the three-game season sweep over Middlebury, 8-0, on Senior Day.
After a single and a pair of walks, Boyle's team-leading fourth homer of the season cleared the fence, and the bases, for an early 4-0 cushion.
It was all Spartan ace Kylie Wright would need as she tossed her third shutout of the season and earned her 10th victory in the circle. She allowed nine hits and walked two with three strikeouts for the six-inning complete game.
After Kayla Fac walked to open the home-half of the fourth, Devin Millerick smacked a single the opposite way. Then, Calli Van Gorden hit a hotshot RBI single through the left side for a run. Miranda Fish brought home one more a batter later on a sacrifice fly.
The Spartans won the game in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs to surpass the run-rule total. Van Gorden hit a deep double to left field to start the inning before advancing to third on a Fish single. Tori Swaine laced a double down the third base line to get home one before Boyle ended the contest with an RBI groundout.
Boyle was 1-for-4 but had five RBIs to lead all players. Millerick finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Van Gorden also crossed the plate twice in a 2-for-3 performance. Also for Castleton (15-17), Fish and Swaine each went 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
For Middlebury (12-18), Sara Tobias and Liza Tarr were both 3-for-3 and collectively accounted for six of nine Panther base hits. Irene Margiotta suffered the loss in the circle. She went the distance and surrendered nine hits and seven earned runs over 5.1 of work. She walked seven batters and struck out four.
The Spartans have a pair of conference home games yet to play versus Rhode Island College. The makeup date will be announced at castletonsports.com.
