GORHAM, Maine - The Castleton University softball team picked up its first Little East Conference victory in program history in game two of a split doubleheader on the road at Southern Maine on Saturday. Castleton dropped game one, 9-0, before taking a back-and-forth game two, 6-5.
After Jamie Boyle managed Castleton's only hit in the opener, Devin Millerick went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored in game two as Miranda Fish and Boyle hit consecutive RBI doubles to highlight the Spartan's three-run fifth that gave them the lead that they would not relinquish.
Castleton (7-10, 1-3 LEC) will return to conference action on Sunday at Southern Maine as it will be the host team to Plymouth State for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Southern Maine 9, Castleton 0 (5 innings)
The Huskies exploded for seven runs in the first inning highlighted by consecutive two-run doubles by Ashley Tinsman and Brynn Hink. Kayleigh Bohan and Kaitlyn Nelson also pitched in run-scoring singles in the frame.
Tinsman smacked her second two-run double of the contest in the second inning on a drive off the center field fence.
Ashley Alward pitched a one-hit shutout for Southern Maine (11-8, 1-3 LEC). She walked one and struck out five.
Boyle had the lone Spartan hit with a one-out single in the second inning. In the third, Kate LaPan and Calli Van Gorden chased Huskie center fielder, Brooke Cross, to both gaps before she made two running grabs.
Emily Harvey pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Spartans. She allowed one hit and one walk. Kylie Wright started and took the loss. She surrendered nine runs, three earned, on ten hits. She did not walk a batter and registered one strikeout.
Castleton 6, Southern Maine 5
Castleton took an early lead in the top of the first when Van Gorden ripped a double to right center to score Millerick from first.
In the top of the third, the Spartans scored twice when Millerick laced a single to left before Tori Swaine and Fish both hit RBI singles. The Huskies answered with two of their own with run-scoring singles by Nelson and Cross.
Southern Maine grabbed a three-run edge in the bottom of the fourth, but Millerick threw out a runner trying to score at home on back-to-back plays to end the inning. Then, Castleton scored three in the fifth to snag a 6-5 advantage. Van Gorden reached on an infield error with one out before Swaine hit an infield single. Then, Fish doubled to right to bring in one before Boyle hit a towering double over the left fielder's head to score two more.
Machaila Arjavich tossed two innings of one-hit ball in relief before Wright came in and pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn her first career save. Olivia Bowen started and earned the victory. She surrendered five runs, three earned, on eight hits over four innings of work. She walked two and had one strikeout.
