Castleton Drops Low Scorer, Walk-Off Against Husson

BANGOR, Maine – Falling on a walk-off three-run home run in game two, the Castleton University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader – 1-0 and 6-5 – at Husson on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton falls to 4-14 overall and to even in the North Atlantic Conference at 2-2. Husson improves to 14-11 and with one more conference series played, is now 4-2.

A bases-loaded walk in the third was the only blemish on starting pitcher Taylor Paquette's record. The senior was otherwise dominant in the circle allowing just one earned over six innings and striking out four Eagles.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, Paquette's counterpart was if possible even more locked in. Jen Jones tossed a complete game to earn the win, allowing a single hit and striking out 10.

Castleton's lone base hit came in the seventh when the frequent-bunting Timi Carone stepped to the plate. The senior outfielder dropped down a perfect drag bunt between first and the pitcher, which she subsequently beat out the fielding and made it to first safely.

Following an offensively quiet game one, the nightcap did not lack contact or power, for that matter.

Splitting runs in the first and second, the Spartans and Eagles entered the top of the third tied at 1-1. With Devin Millerick on second via a leadoff double, Carone bunted her over and reached safely at the same time. During the next at-bat, Carone stole second and Calli Van Gorden mashed a three-run homer for a 4-1 lead.

Castleton kept moving runners around the bases and it paid off as a throwing error by the pitcher led to a run scored and a 5-1 Spartan advantage.

It did not hold though as Husson rebounded with two runs in the last of the fifth to bring the score to 5-3 as it headed to the bottom of the seventh.

During the final inning, the Eagles got the first two runners on and then after an out, Tamara Aunchman homered.

Paquette (3-10) was tagged with the loss after surrendered the walk-off hit.

Castleton returns to action for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader start at Southern Vermont College on Monday.
