Spartans Set for Home Opener vs. Johnson State at 3:30

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's softball team looks to get back in the win column on Friday afternoon, hosting in-state foe Johnson State in a North Atlantic Conference twin bill at Spartan Field.

The doubleheader, slated for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch, marks the first home games of the season for the Spartans. Castleton enters the day with a 1-1 mark in NAC action, and a 7-5 record overall. Most recently, the Spartans dropped a pair of games to Rensselaer on the road.

Tori Swaine leads the offensive attack this season with a .351 batting average on 13 hits. The sophomore infielder is also tied for the team lead with a pair of doubles, and leads the team with four walks, three sacrifice flies, a .386 on-base percentage. Timi Carone's 11 RBIs lead the team, as do her 14 hits and four stolen bases. Carone comes into the doubleheader with a .304 batting average, while Karli Theberge is close behind with a .295 average. Theberge also ranks third on the team in slugging and on-base percentage, while tying Swaine and Sara Baker for second-most hits on the team, with 13. Baker has belted the Spartans' only two home runs this season, including a solo shot the last time out at RPI.

Taylor Paquette leads the team with 40.0 innings pitched this season, registering a 3.15 earned-run average. The junior right-hander has struck out 19 thus far, compiling a 5-1 record on the season. Kayla Wood has tossed 34.0 innings of her own, appearing in seven contests with a 2-3 record this season. Wood has a 4.50 ERA thus far, and has struck out 11 batters on the season.

Johnson enters the twin bill with 1-3 record overall, and hasn't played a game since March 11 in Florida. The Badgers have had 10 consecutive games postponed, including a pair of conference doubleheaders.

Anna Bingham leads the way with a .364 batting average, as the senior is 4-for-11 on the season with two doubles and a triple. She has also driven in a team-leading three runs and has scored twice. Kaitlynn Woodward is batting an even .300 (3-for-10) on the year with two of her hits going for triples. Woodward has scored three times to lead her team. Abby McRae has a pair of hits and a pair of walks on the season, ranking third on the team in on-base percentage at .333, and has a team-best three stolen bases.

Woodward has been the top pitcher for the Badgers so far, tossing 13.0 innings for a 1-1 record and 3.77 ERA. The sophomore has gone the distance in both of her starts, allowing seven earned runs on 16 hits and four walks. Hannah Leroux has two appearances on the season, combining for 9.0 innings and an 0-1 mark with a 2.33 ERA.

Castleton has won 13 consecutive games against the Badgers dating back to the 2010 season, and has won each of the last eight matchups at Spartan Field dating back to 2009. Last year, Castleton traveled to Johnson and took both ends of the doubleheader, winning game one 5-1 before taking game two, 11-2. Carone and Swaine each had three hits off Woodward in the game-two victory, with Swaine notching a double and two RBIs as well.
