Smith Wins NAC Championship Individual Title

FARMINGTON, Maine – Grandon Smith continued his dominant senior season by capturing the North Atlantic Conference individual title on Saturday to help lead the Castleton men's cross country team to a second-place finish as a team in the NAC Championship at Mount Blue High School hosted by UMaine-Farmington.

Smith paced the field of 85 runners to the finish line in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 26:24.9, 20 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. The senior's fifth first-place finish this season marks the second year in a row he has taken the top spot overall at the NAC Championship.

Freshman Gannon McKearin crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 27:09.3, while Jared Wheeler came away with a 14th-place time of 29:16.6. Oliver Rodgers was the fourth Spartan to cross the finish line in 32nd position with a time of 32:01.5, just ahead of teammate Carter Kline in 34th place with a time of 32:28.2. Jacob Peet came in 73rd place with a time of 37:54.8, while Tom Rizza clocked in at 40:14.9 for the Spartans. 

Castleton claimed second overall out of 10 teams with a score of 83 points, just behind first-place Colby-Sawyer, which won the NAC Championship with a score of 37 points behind three top 10 finishers. UMaine-Farmington earned third place with 89 points, one point ahead of Maine Maritime in fourth. Husson rounded out the top five with 130 points as a team.

The Spartans will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11, for the Division III New England Regional hosted by Southern Maine.
