Smith Claims Individual Title at Western New England Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Grandon Smith claimed his fourth individual meet title of 2017 to help lead the Castleton men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish overall at the Western New England University Invitational on Saturday.

Smith paced the field of 106 runners to the finish line with an impressive time of 25:52, 36 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the eight-kilometer race. This marks the fourth time in five races Smith has taken the top spot this season.  

Freshman Gannon McKearin continued his strong season with a fifth-place finish after clocking in at 27:32. Jared Wheeler was the next Spartan to cross the finish line in 16th with a time of 28:25. Oliver Rodgers came in 52nd place with a time of 31:20, just ahead of teammate Carter Kline, who rounded out the Spartan top five with a time of 32:46.  

Jacob Peet earned a time of 38:00, and Tom Rizza crossed the line in 39:48.

Castleton finished with 128 points as a team to place fifth overall, just 10 behinds behind fourth-place Nichols. With three runners in the top 10, UMass-Dartmouth captured the meet title with a score of 61 points.

The Spartans will return to the course Saturday, Oct. 28, for the North Atlantic Conference Championship held at UMaine-Farmington.
