Smith Paces Men's Cross Country to Second-Place Finish at Mountaineer Invitational

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Grandon Smith captured the top spot overall and the Castleton men's cross country team, backed by three top-five finishes, took second in the Mountaineer Invitational Saturday afternoon at Southern Vermont College.

Smith paced the field of 51 runners to the finish line in the five-kilometer race with an impressive time of 16:56. Freshman Gannon McKearin followed closely with a second-place finish after clocking in at 18:01. Jared Wheeler also landed in the top five with a fifth-place time of 18:36.

Oliver Rodgers checked in at 20:52, good for 17th overall. Carter Kline rounded out the Spartan top five in 23rd place overall with a time of 21:57. 

Castleton totaled 48 points as a team, just one point behind MCLA for the meet title. Host Southern Vermont placed third overall with a total of 89 points. 

The Spartans return to action next Saturday to host the Castleton Invitational at 11:45 a.m.
