Spartans Head to NCAA Regionals

Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans men's cross country team closes out their season this weekend as they compete in NCAA Regionals at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Connecticut.

Last weekend at the ECAC Championship hosted by Williams College, Castleton finished 16th out of 40 teams, in a meet that featured many top-ranked teams in the country.

Grandon Smith continued his impressive season for the Spartans, leading the team finishing 12th overall in a field of 277, with a time of 27:07. He was named to the All-ECAC team following his finish. Smith has been the lead runner for Castleton this season, finishing first for the squad in every race.

Jonah Lavigne was the second harrier for the Spartans, finishing in a clip of 28:38 in 77th place. Ben Girard was 10 seconds behind Lavigne, finishing in 88th place in a time of 28:48.

Junior Patrick Gilligan had his best team finish of the season, placing fourth for Castleton in a time of 29:43, just ahead of freshman teammate Alex Lauzon who crossed the finish line in 29:51 to round out the top five for the Spartans.

Last season at the NCAA Regionals, the Spartans finished 34th out of 54 teams. Smith led the team in a time of 28:16, with Lavigne just 20 seconds behind, crossing the finish line in a time of 28:36. Girard was third for the team (28:53), and Gilligan closed out the top five finishing at 30:00 flat.
