Spartans Finish 16th at ECAC Championship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Grandon Smith finished 12th overall this morning at Williams College to lead the Castleton men's cross country team to a 16th-place finish in the 2015 ECAC Championship.

The Spartans had three runners place inside the top-100, as the squad finished the event with 438 team points, just 12 shy of a top-15 finish. Amherst captured the victory with a total score of 53 after having three runners finish inside the event's top ten. Williams came home in second with 77 points, followed by Middlebury (117), Colby (145) and Tufts (152). 

Smith turned in, arguably, his most impressive performance of the season, completing the 8k course in a time of 27:07.29. He finished just over a minute off Liam Simpson's pace, who took home the top spot with a time of 26:24.13 for Williams. 

Senior Jonah Lavigne was the second Spartan harrier to cross the line, as he claimed a 75th-place finish in a time of 28:38.53, while senior Ben Girard followed in 86th (28:48.54).

Rounding out the Castleton top five was junior Patrick Gilligan and freshman Alex Lauzon, who finished respectively in 130th (29:43.58) and 135th overall (29:51.38). 

The Spartans conclude their season next Saturday, as they compete in the NCAA Regionals held at the Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Conn. The men's race is slated to begin at 11 am, followed by the women's event at noon.
