POULTNEY, Vt. – Castleton's men's cross country team turned in a stellar performance this morning to claim the squad's first victory of the season at the Green Mountain College Invitational.
The Spartans finished the event with 25 points after five of the squad's seven participants placed among the top ten. Johnson St. came home in second with 58 points, followed by Sage (64), Green Mountain (100) and Vermont Tech (104).
Grandon Smith and Ben Girard placed atop the leaderboard with respective first and second-place finishes. Smith turned in a time of 26:31 to lead the field, while Girard trailed behind in second by 46 seconds.
Jonah Lavigne was the third Spartan harrier to cross the line, finishing in fifth overall with a time of 28:00, whereas Alex Lauzon came home in seventh just 51 seconds off Lavigne's pace. Patrick Gilligan rounded out the Castleton top five with a tenth place finish.
The Spartans are back in action on Oct. 31 when they travel to Bangor, Maine to compete in the 2015 North Atlantic Conference Championship. The women's race is slated to begin at 11 am with the men's race following at noon.
