Spartans Take Second in the Vermont State Championships

Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans had a pair of seniors finish in the top five to secure a second place finish at the 2013 Vermont State Championship hosted by Castleton State College on Saturday.

Castleton took second by scoring 75 points, trailing just Lyndon St. (27) and ahead of Division II St. Michael's (83). Norwich rounded out the top four with 89 points. Last year the Spartans took fifth, finishing behind both the Purple Knights and the Cadets.

Senior Isaac French was Castleton's top finisher, taking third overall with his time of 26:43, just five seconds out of second. Classmate Steve Hagemann was eight seconds back with his time of 26:51, placing fourth overall. Both earned All-State honors with their performances.

Freshman Jonah Lavigne was the third Spartan to cross, taking 19th overall with his time of 28:47. Matthew Woodward and Nick Tubolino rounded out Castleton's top five, placing 24th and 25th with their times of 28:58 and 29:15.

The Spartans return to action next weekend when they race at the Saratoga Invitational on Oct. 12.
