Grandon Smith Closes 2016-17 Campaign at New England Championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior Grandon Smith closed out the 2017 outdoor season for the Castleton University men's track and field squad with a solid performance Saturday at the New England Division III Championships, hosted by Williams College.

Smith finished third in his heat and 18th overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.62, just 63/100ths of a second off the school record he set on April 22 at the Springfield College Classic.

Smith was one of Castleton's top student-athletes throughout the 2016-17 campaign, earning team MVP honors for cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. He won the NAC and ECAC individual titles in cross country during the fall, qualified for the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 600 meter run during the winter, and won the NAC title in the 800 meter run as spring finally arrived.

The Castleton men's track and field team continued to show improvement in 2017, setting nine indoor and several outdoor school records. The Spartans finished fourth at the NAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, featuring conference titles for Smith, Austin Beauregard in the 110-meter hurdles, and Tayler Larmie in the hammer throw.
