Grandon Smith Paces Men's Track and Field at Springfield

CASTLETON, Vt. – Grandon Smith qualified for the New England Division III Championships in the 800-meter run as the Castleton men's track and field team competed in the Springfield College Classic on Saturday.

Smith shattered the program record in the distance run with a time of 1:56.99, good for third place overall. 

Ryan Barry led Castleton in the short distance, earning a time of 11.78 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Nick Reca crossed the line in 12.08 seconds, just ahead of teammate Robert Novobilsky's time of 12.63 seconds. Barry checked in at 23.53 seconds in the 200-meter dash, just ahead of Matt Clark's time of 24.04 seconds. Clark led the way for Castleton in the 400-meter dash, capturing a time of 54.81 seconds. Novobilsky (54.81s) and Sebastien Crowell (58.66s) rounded out the top-three in the event for the Spartans. 

Morgan Rainville led Castleton in two different throwing events. The freshman registered a fifth-place finish in the shot put (12.25m) and earned a 14th-place finish in the discus (32.67). Tayler Larmie was the top Spartan finisher in the hammer throw, shattering his own program record with a heave of 40.26 meters. Clayton Bailey recorded a 40.31-meter throw in the javelin, good for 15th place overall. 

Austin Beauregard was the lone Spartan competitor in the hurdles, clocking in at 17.17 seconds and 1:04.05 in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. 

The Spartans will next travel to Colby-Sawyer Sunday, April 30, for the North Atlantic Conference Championship.
