MEDFORD, Mass. – Grandon Smith continues to rewrite the Castleton track and field record book, setting a new school record in the 600 meter run at the 2017 Division III New England Championships, hosted by Tufts University at the Gantcher Center.
Running in the first of three heats, Smith finished third in his race with a time of 1:24.11, just 6/10ths of a second behind the heat winner. After all three heats were completed, Smith found himself in 13th place in the overall standings, just 1/100th of a second behind the 12th-place finisher.
Smith's time is over a second faster than the mark he posted a month ago at the Smith Invitational. Smith ends the indoor season as the holder of four individual school records as well as a part of two relay school standards.
Smith and the rest of the Castleton University men's track and field team will start preparing for the outdoor season, with the first competition, the Jim Sheehan Memorial, scheduled for Saturday, April 1, at Fitchburg State in Fitchburg, Mass.
