RUTLAND, Vt. - Feeling the effects of a shortened roster, the Castleton University men's tennis team was swept in Little East Conference play by the UMass Boston Beacons - 9-0 - on Saturday afternoon indoors at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Castleton falls to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while UMass Boston extends its winning streak to four improving to 5-3 while staying unscathed in league action at 3-0.
Missing its top singles player, Castleton's No. 2 competitor filled in at the top spot, battling UMass Boston's best. Dropping the first set 6-1, Wheeler battled late in the second before succumbing on a late break-of-serve. Also performing in the top spot of doubles with Nate Hinson, the Spartan duo was overwhelmed from the start and dropped an 8-0 decision. During the second flight of individual play, Hinson dropped the match by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
Levi Williams put up the strongest Spartan battle of the day at the fourth flight of singles. Falling to the Beacons' Onkgopotse Mokoka on a late break-of-serve in the first set (6-4), he battled into a second-set tiebreak before falling 7-6 (7-1).
Men's tennis returns to action on Saturday as it heads on the road to face Southern Maine in Little East play.
