CASTLETON, Vt. -- Igor Almeida and Jared Wheeler's wins at the top two flights of singles were not enough as the Castleton University men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision against Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at the Castleton Courts.
Castleton falls to 2-5 overall and drops its second Little East contest of the season (0-2), while Rhode Island College improves to 3-1 and stays unscathed in conference action (2-0).
Extending his match-winning streak to six straight, Almeida earned a hard-fought straight-sets victory at number one singles. The junior has not dropped a match since his first appearance of the year after picking up the 7-5, 7-5 win.
At second singles, Wheeler proved to be a fighting force as he came back from a set down to earn the point. Dropping the opener 6-2, Wheeler shifted gears and earned a break in each of the final two sets to collect 6-3, 6-3 scores.
In doubles action, Almeida and Wheeler put the pressure on at the top flight of doubles to earn five games but were unable to keep up with the Anchormen duo. At second doubles, Nate Hinson and Tripp Norris picked up four games in the loss.
