DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Playing outside for the first time during the 2019 season, the Castleton University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision in its Little East Conference opener to the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs on Sunday afternoon at the UMD Courts.
Castleton falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league action, while UMass-Dartmouth picks up its second-straight win to improve to 2-3 and 1-0 in the conference.
Continuing to lead the Spartans as he has all season, junior Igor Almeida earned his fifth-straight victory in singles to move to 5-1 during the campaign. The Praia, Cape Verde native was forced to fight back for only the second time all year as he earned the three-set come-from-behind win. Dropping the first set on a late break-of-serve - 7-5 - Almeida returned the favor in the second as he picked up a 6-4 win. In the decider, Almeida remained strong and put the pressure on to come away with a 6-3 score.
Elsewhere in singles, Jared Wheeler and Nate Hinson put up valiant efforts to stick with their Corsair opponents but were unable to pick up a win. In doubles action, Almeida joined Wheeler to face UMass-Dartmouth's top duo and grabbed two games in the loss. Spencer Butter and Oliver Rodgers battled to earn three games in a third-doubles loss.
Men's tennis returns to the courts at 2 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Rhode Island College in its second Little East contest.
