Rolling to a 4-0 week, Almeida improved to 2-1 in singles and doubles through the first three matches of the season. On Wednesday at Norwich, Almeida earned two of Castleton's three total points. At the first flight of doubles, the Praia, Cape Verde native gutted out an 8-6 victory with his partner before continuing to pick up a straight-set victory in singles.
He only gained momentum on Saturday as the Spartans posted a 9-0 win against the Hornets of Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. Almeida and his teammate did not surrender a game at No. 1 doubles, bringing the former halfway to his complete shutout. At the top flight of singles, Almeida coasted to a double bagel – 6-0, 6-0 – win to set the tone for the rest of individual play.
Earning Rookie of the Week honors, Williams posted a 3-1 slate. At the Shapiro Fieldhouse against Norwich, Williams was forced to battle back and earn a come-from-behind three-set win. Dropping the opener 6-2, the Schroon Lake, N.Y. native posted identical 6-2, 6-2 second and third sets for the victory.
On Saturday, the Schroon Lake, N.Y. native battled with his partner to an 8-5 win at second doubles before steamrolling his opponent in the third flight of singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Men's tennis returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as they host MCLA at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
