ST. ALBANS, Vt. – The Castleton men's tennis team picked up its second consecutive win to open North Atlantic Conference play on Sunday afternoon, winning 9-0 over Lyndon at Collins Perley Sport and Fitness.
The Spartans improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in NAC action with the win, while Lyndon sits at 1-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. It was the second consecutive day that the Spartans were victorious by a 9-0 final after defeating Johnson State by the same score on Saturday.
Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe opened the day with an 8-1 win in top doubles play, and Ryan Mulder and Tyler Wilcox followed with a win by the same score at second-flight doubles. Jared Wheeler and Nathan Hinson cruised to an 8-0 win at third-flight doubles to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Hornets battled at the top two singles spots, but Castleton's best held off the attacks to come away with a singles sweep as well. Marcil was taken to a second-set tiebreak, coming out on top 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) against Tyler Hall. Barthe dropped his first set, 6-3, but bounced back with a 6-0 win in the second set before finishing Jake LaCerda, 10-7, in the third set.
Mulder continued his stellar season with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, while Wheeler blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot. Wilcox finished up his day with a 6-2, 6-2 win at fifth-flight singles, and Hinson rounded out the day with a victory at the sixth singles spot after his opponent retired.
The Spartans return home on Wednesday, hosting MCLA at 4 p.m. in a conference battle.
