STOWE, Vt. – The Castleton men's tennis team opened its North Atlantic Conference schedule with a convincing 9-0 victory over Johnson State on Saturday afternoon at the Top Notch tennis facilities.
Castleton improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while Johnson State falls to 1-6 overall on the season and 0-1 in the NAC.
Castleton opened the day with a sweep of doubles play, taking the Nos. 1 and 3 positions by scores of 8-0. Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe didn't drop a point at the top flight, while Jared Wheeler and Nathan Hinson won 8-0 in the third flight. Ryan Mulder and Tyler Wilcox teamed up for the first time this season for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Spartans took all six singles spots in straight sets, with Barthe and Wilcox sweeping their second and fifth-flight matches, respectively, 6-0, 6-0. Marcil took the top-flight match 6-2, 6-0, while Mulder won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Wheeler continued his strong play in his rookie campaign, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Hinson rounded out the day with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 6 singles position.
This was the second time this season that Castleton defeated Johnson State by a 9-0 final score, and the fourth time this season overall that the Spartans swept an opponent, 9-0.
Castleton returns to the courts on Sunday when it travels to St. Albans to take on Lyndon at the Collins Perley Sport and Fitness Center.
