RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's tennis team won its fourth straight match against a Vermont opponent to open the season on Saturday afternoon, handily defeating Johnson St. by a final score of 9-0 at the Grand Slam Tennis Center in a non-conference match.
The Spartans move to 4-0 overall this year, while Johnson St. sits at 0-1 after the season-opening loss.
The Spartans opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of doubles pairings, as all three Spartan teams were victorious 8-0. Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe teamed up to beat Gerrit Lane and Richie Perez, while Ryan Mulder and Trevor Hanna took down Alex Harcourt and Benjamin Holl in the No. 2 position. Jared Wheeler and Brody Wagner played together for the first time this season, picking up an 8-0 decision over Matthew Fogg and Evan Daigneault.
Singles play was more of the same for the Spartans, as no player lost more than one point combined and two players didn't drop any points. Barthe was perfect on the day, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles over Harcourt, while Mulder matched his teammate with a 6-0, 6-0 win in third-flight action against Perez. Marcil and Tyler Wilcox won 6-0, 6-1 and Nos. 1 and 6 singles, respectively, while Hanna and Wheeler each won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth- and fifth-flight singles, respectively.
Castleton is slated to hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday as they travel to Norwich for a non-conference contest at 3 p.m.
