Spartans Host Johnson St. in Non-Conference Matchup

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Johnson St. in a non-conference match at the Grand Slam Tennis Center in Rutland.

The Spartans look to extend their three-match winning streak to open the season, as the squad has already taken down three other Vermont teams: Norwich, Lyndon and Green Mountain. This is the second year in a row the Spartans have opened with three or more consecutive wins, as the team won its first six matches of the season in 2016.

Quentin Barthe is 3-0 at the No. 2 singles position, and he also boasts and unbeaten 3-0 mark in doubles play at the No. 1 spot with Seth Marcil. Marcil, the reigning NAC Player of the Week, is 2-1 in singles action at the top flight. Ryan Mulder is also unbeaten on the year, winning all six of his matches between singles and doubles play. The has wins in three different singles flights and two different doubles flights, proving his versatility for Castleton.

Trevor Hanna is 2-0 in both singles and doubles play, winning at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Jared Wheeler was named the NAC Rookie of the Week last week after going 2-0 against Green Mountain, winning at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles while conceding just two points in total throughout the match. Wheeler and Tyler Wilcox have teamed up for a 1-1 mark in doubles action, while Wilcox is also 1-1 in singles play this season.

Johnson St. is playing its first match of 2017 on Saturday, and it returns just one player from its roster a season ago in Richie Perez. Also back is junior Garrett Lane, who played most recently during the 2015 season.
