RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's tennis team rolled to victory on Saturday afternoon, downing Green Mountain College in a non-conference matchup to push its winning streak to three matches to open the season.
Castleton opened the day with a trio of doubles wins, surrendering just one point in total across the three matches. Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe teamed up for an 8-1 win over Truman Cressey and Kei Sako in the top spot, while Jared Wheeler and Tyler Wilcox picked up an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Ryan Mulder and Brody Wagner also claimed an 8-0 win in third-flight doubles for the Spartans.
The Spartans carried momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches in straight sets. Marcil was faced with little resistance at the top spot, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Cressey. Barthe and Mulder coasted to straight set wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots over Sako and Eric Wade, respectively, while Jared Wheeler got a 6-0, 6-2 win over Pierce Caldwell in the No. 4 position.
The No. 5 singles position was the tightest battle of the day, as Wilcox battled Javier Lugris. Wilcox won in straight sets, defeating Lugris in a tiebreak in the first set before closing him out with a 6-4 win in the second set. Spencer Butter ended the day with his first career victory for Castleton, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Adrian Torres in sixth-flight singles.
Castleton will face Johnson St. next Saturday, March 18, at 1 p.m.
