Men’s Soccer Drops Conference-Opener to UMass Boston

CASTLETON, Vt. –The Castleton University men's soccer team dropped its Little East Conference (LEC) opener to UMass Boston, 3-0, on Saturday.

Freshman goalie Andres Soto-Burgos made a career-high eight saves for the Spartans. Jack Kingdon and Mason Thompson each registered three shots for Castleton (2-5-0, 0-1-0 LEC).

Nilton de Andrade, Riven Rodrigues, and Rafael DeSouza scored the goals for UMass Boston (5-1-1, 1-0-0 LEC). In goal, Omar Castro-Dreher had four saves to record his third shutout of the season.

Castleton's best chance to score came early in the second half. After the Spartans drew a foul, Kingdon stepped into a free kick from 21 yards out that bounced just wide of the goal.

The Beacons cracked the board at the 13:01 mark when de Andrade took a pass from Gerardo Castaneda and after taking two steps to collect the leading pass, fired a strike past Soto-Burgos.

Just over six minutes after the Spartans narrowly missed the equalizer, Riven Rodrigues doubled the lead for UMass Boston. After lifting a touch over a defender to himself, he collected the ball and found the back of the net for his first of the season.

Rafael DeSouza also netted his first goal of the campaign to complete the scoring at the 54:22 mark. He picked up a rebound and ripped his shot attempt past Soto-Burgos, who was not able to recover in time to make a play.

Castleton returns to the pitch on Sunday on the road at Middlebury at 1:30 p.m.
