NORTHFIELD, Vt. –The Castleton University men's soccer team lost to host Norwich University in non-conference action on Tuesday evening, 3-1.
Hunter Lortie, Andrew Kalombo, and Joseph Thongsythavong did the scoring for Norwich (4-1-1). Junior Jack Kingdon scored the lone goal for Castleton (2-4-0).
The Cadets scored twice within the final five minutes of the first half to go into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Kingdon registered his team-leading fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 64:58 mark to pull the Spartans to within one.
Kalombo scored on a header just 1:11 later to give Norwich a two-goal lead once again. Alex Brannan earned the assist thanks to an accurate centering attempt.
Kingdon nearly brought Castleton back to within one after collecting a loose ball and dribbling around the goalkeeper, Robert Wagenseller. His ensuing shot was stopped by a Norwich defender with an illegal hand ball to grant another penalty kick opportunity. Wagenseller dove correctly to turn aside the chance.
It was a tail of two halves in the shot department as the Cadets earned a 13-4 shot advantage in the first half, but the Spartans came back to out-shoot the hosts, 8-4, in the closing 45 minutes.
Wagenseller turned aside five shots to earn his fourth win of the season. Andres Soto-Burgos got the nod for his third consecutive match. His record drops to 2-2-0 in the six-save effort.
Castleton is set to open Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday as it will host UMass Boston at Dave Wolk Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
