TROY, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's soccer team surrendered four first-half goals and went on to fall on the road at Rensselaer, 6-1, on Saturday.
Freshman Jacob Henderson scored his second goal of the season to account for the Spartan goal shortly before the expiration of the first half. He fired in a rebound after a shot from Jack Kingdon resulted in a diving save from the Engineer goalkeeper, Luke Brezek.
Six different goal-scorers highlighted the offensive outburst for Rensselaer led by Austin Betterly, who scored once and added a pair of assists. RPI got the scoring 5:58 into the contest when Arik Duncan dribbled around Castleton starter, Alex Fernald, and deposited a shot into the unattended goal. Trevor Bisson made it 2-0 at the 14:38 mark on a header on a corner kick inserted by Michael Harten. Themn, RPI went up 3-0 at the 18:23 mark when a pass from Arik Duncan found the streaking Betterly beyond the Castleton defense and alone for a one-touch shot and goal. Josh Gaudiano scored on a volley on a service from Betterly to make the advantage four for the host squad with 16:57 left to play in the opening half.
Second-half goals from Paul Silva and Gabe Terando completed the scoring as Rensselaer rode off with an 18-10 edge in shots.
Fernald took the loss for Castleton after surrendering four goals in the first half. Freshman Andres-Soto Burgos made his collegiate debut in the second half and made a pair of saves. For the Engineers, Brezak played the first half and made one save to earn the win. Matt LaBranche came in for the final 45 minutes and made three saves.
Castleton will get right back at it on Sunday for a 1:30 matchup at Union College.
