Kingdon Scores As Castleton Drops Back-And-Forth Battle To Norwich

CASTLETON, Vt. – Jack Kingdon's third goal of the season put the Castleton University men's soccer team ahead early, but it was not enough as the Norwich University Cadets came back to down the home team 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Castleton drops to 3-3-1 overall on the season, while Norwich stays unscathed and improves to 5-0-3.

Picking up right where the 2017 edition between the squads left off – a 1-1 double overtime draw – Castleton and Norwich traded sprints down the pitch looking to gain the momentum. The Cadets were poised to be that team with three shots and a corner in the opening 10 minutes, yet the Spartans turned the tide quickly, taking advantage of an opening.

Heading left to right, Seraphin Iradukunda sent the ball from just inside the 30-yard line toward Kingdon at the eight. Running with it for a stride, Norwich keeper Brendan Germano dove, causing a scrum for the ball. On the other side of the pile, Kingdon regrouped and sent it across the front of the goal and into the far right corner.

It would not last though as Norwich quickly tied the contest at 1-1 as Matt Hilton tallied his first score of the season. Amerle Nemeye sent the ball behind and slightly past Hilton, who fighting momentum, redirected it and caught Castleton keeper Alex Fernald leaning.

Remaining deadlocked over the next 45-plus minutes, Norwich took the lead for good at the 64:51 mark. Nemeye made a break for the bouncing ball and after winning a jump ball with the Spartan defender, gathered and sent it into the twine.

Fernald and Germano both played stellar matches between the posts, making four and six saves, respectively while playing the entire 90 minutes.

Castleton led the shot battle 15-10, including winning the second half tally 8-5. The Spartans also notched four corner kicks to the Cadets one.

Men's soccer returns to Little East Conference action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Rhode Island College at Dave Wolk Stadium. The Anchormen were ranked third in the LEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
