QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – Four finishers in the top-10 of a 60-racer field helped the Castleton University men's alpine skiing team to a second-place finish in the giant slalom at West Mountain on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans checked in with a team time of 6:13.57, just more than two seconds behind first-place Babson, which finished in 6:11.17. Clarkson finished third on the day at 6:15.82.
Paul Rechberger placed fourth overall with a time of 2:02.36, narrowly missing out on the podium. The sophomore finished less than half of a second off the champion's pace, as the top-five finishers on the day were separated by just 0.48 seconds. Jan Klindic finished second on the team and sixth overall for Castleton at 2:05.21, while Cameron Heald finished seventh overall on Klindic's heels with a time of 2:06.00. Anton Smith collected an eighth-place finish with a time of 2:06.09 to round out the Spartans' notables.
Clarkson's Thomas Daigle finished the race atop the leaderboard at 2:01.96, followed by Babson's MacIntyre Henderson (2:02.02) and Jack Blanchard (2:02.12).
The Spartans return to the slopes of West Mountain on Sunday morning to compete in the second of two GS races. The first run of the day is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
