LUDLOW, Vt. – Paul Rechberger returned to the top of the podium on Friday afternoon for the Castleton men's alpine ski team, leading his team to a top finish with a first place result in the season's first giant slalom race at Okemo Mountain Resort.
The sophomore claimed four GS victories in his rookie campaign, including the USCSA Eastern Regional Championship. Logan Mackie continued his strong debut week with a second-place finish, while Anton Smith added a top-10 finish to lead the Spartans to their first-place mark.
Castleton topped the field with a team total of 8:08.71, followed by Babson at 8:10.75 and Clarkson at 8:16.01. The course and conditions proved difficult on the day, as 13 racers failed to finish their first run, while another seven racers were unable to complete the day's second run.
Rechberger opened the day in sixth place after the first run, but laid down the fastest second run of the day to vault to the top of the leaderboard with a combined total of 2:41.09. Mackie posted the fifth-fastest opening run before clocking in with the third-best second run of the day for a combined total of 2:41.22. Smith jumped from 17th place up to ninth place after posting the 10th-fastest second run, giving him a two-run time of 2:46.40.
