Spartan Alpine Ski Teams Head To Nationals Riding Regionals Victory Momentum

CASTLETON, Vt. – Once again making an appearance in the final event of the season, the Castleton University men's and women's alpine ski teams head to Lake Placid, N.Y. for the 2018 United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championship.

The Spartan squads will be looking to back up their recent success at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships over the next few days at the world-famous Whiteface Mountain.

Just over a week ago at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y., Castleton collectively stood at the top of the podium as both teams earned their respective regional titles. The women earned first in both the slalom and giant slalom led by Kylie Mackie's first collegiate victory. Setting the pace on Saturday, Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference Women's Rookie of the Year, Li Aunes recorded second in the slalom.

Meanwhile, following a second-place result during the slalom portion of the event, the men's team was required to come from behind to knock off Clarkson University. On Sunday, ECSC Rookie of the Year Paul Rechberger led the charge in the giant slalom, clocking the top time (1:37.99) by more than a second.

Jan Klindic and Anton Smith helped reinforce Rechberger's effort and power Castleton to the top spot by a mere 50-hundredths-of-a-second. Following a couple of tiebreakers, the Spartans claimed the regional championship over the Golden Knights.

During the 2017 USCSA National Championships at Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Ore. Castleton's alpine ski teams put together impressive results. Linn Ljungemo and Klindic became the first three-time National Championship All-Americans during the history of women's and men's programs, respectively.

In the combined team results, the women's team placed sixth as the men nabbed a podium spot, securing a bronze finish.
