ANDOVER, N.H. – Completing the regular season schedule behind only Clarkson University in the team standings, the Castleton University men's alpine ski team finished as the runner-up institution in the ECSC MacConnell Division standings.
It was Paul Rechberger's performance throughout much of the season, which helped lead the Spartans to their second-place finish as a team. Individually, the freshman finished nine of the 10 possible races. Behind a single bronze finish, three runner-ups and five podium-topping performances, Rechberger went a perfect 9-for-9 on the podium.
On Saturday, Rechberger picked up his fifth victory of the season in the day's second slalom by nearly four seconds. Racing the best time in both of his runs – 45.60 and 50.36 seconds – Rechberger was not to be challenged. Earlier, he combined for third with a third and second-place finish in his two runs.
Backing up Rechberger was Jan Klindic and Anton Smith in the afternoon, recording respective combined times of 1:40.29 and 1:43.21. During the morning slalom event, it was freshman Oskar Eriksson and Paul Klosterman who rounded out the scoring three.
Team-wise, Castleton ranked behind Clarkson and Babson after both runs during both slalom events. Finishing seven seconds behind after one, the Spartans cut the deficit to 39-hundredths-of-a-second between third and first in the day's second slalom.
Castleton men's alpine skiing returns to the slopes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 for the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships. The races will be held at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y. during Saturday and Sunday.
