Castleton Begins Season With Second-Place Finish At Okemo

LUDLOW, Vt. – Behind Paul Rechberger's second-place finish, the Castleton men's alpine skiing team finished second in its first giant slalom race of the season at Okemo Mountain Resort on Thursday afternoon.

In the highly-contested race, Castleton finished just three seconds behind the first place Clarkson squad and slightly over a second ahead of Babson in third.

Rechberger collected second behind a 2:07.75 combined time. In his first career race for Castleton, the freshman crossed the line in 1:01.46 (2nd) before notching a 1:06.29 (3rd) in the later race. Rechberger was 0.99 seconds behind the first place skier.

Taking 10th, 11th and 13th for the Spartans were Oskar Eriksson (2:11.94), Anton Smith (2:11.95) and Connor Kelly (2:12.03). The latter placed 15th in the first run, before remaining steady and capturing sixth in the second race.

Carter Lawrence (2:13.15) and Christopher Yopp (2:14.28) rounded out the top 20 for the Spartans, while Michael Hirschbuhl (2:18.93) and Nathan Bedell (2:26.36) were 25th and 31st, respectively.

Castleton returns to action at 9:30 a.m. on Friday to compete in the slalom at Okemo.
