NORTH CREEK, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's and women's nordic ski teams participated in the Johnsburg Nordic Fest NYSSRA Classic at the North Creek Snow Bowl at Gore Mountain on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
On Saturday, the men and women competed in a 10-kilometer classic race, while just the men partook in a freestyle sprint on Sunday afternoon.
John Paluszek paced the Spartans squad consisting of six skiers and finished third overall with a time of 20:14.4. Placing less than a minute behind his teammate, Andrew Doherty clocked a split of 20:50.7 and finished sixth.
Grouped together in the results and crossing the line in 8-12 places, respectively, was David Harvey (22:10.9), Devin Perry (22:22.1), Alex Williams (24:18.0), Jared Wheeler (26:44.5) and Ryan Boeke (35:49.8).
For the women, Megan Greene and Emily Greene led the Spartans, placing third and fourth, respectively in the under-20 girls results. Megan clocked a time of 25:35.2 in her first race of the 2018-19 season and finished less than a minute behind the second-place racer. Emily crossed the line with a split of 28:37.7.
During Sunday's freestyle sprint, five Spartan men competed in a tournament-style bracket led by Paluszek. Posting the fastest time in the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds, he earned the top-overall time with a 3:00.9. Earning the speediest time in his quarter and semi, Doherty advanced to the final, as well, clocking the third-best split (3:09.8).
Rounding out the top 10 final results, Harvey (3:19.1) and Williams (3:39.5) advanced to the finals and impressed.
The nordic ski teams will return to the course following the New Year as they head to the U.S. Senior Nationals at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury, Vt. on Jan. 3-8.
