JERICHO, Vt. – For the second consecutive year, the Castleton University men's Nordic ski team has qualified for the USCSA National Championships, as the Spartans finished in third place at the ECSC Regional Championships held this past weekend at the Ethan Allen Biathlon Center.
Devin Perry led the Spartans throughout the weekend, starting with a fifth-place finish in the 6.6-kilometer classic event Saturday with a time of 23:03. After finishing in sixth place among qualifying athletes in the one-kilometer sprint Saturday afternoon, Perry posted a time of 53:33 in the 15-kilometer event Sunday to finish the weekend in sixth place overall.
David Harvey consistently placed in the top 10 throughout the weekend, starting with a ninth-place finish in the 6.6-kilometer event with a time of 25:27. He advanced to the finals of the one-kilometer sprint with a preliminary time of 3:39, and then completed Sunday's 15-kilometer race in 55:52, ending the weekend in ninth place overall.
Keegan Cummings posted times of 29:40 in the 6.6-kilometer event, 4:26 in the one-kilometer sprint, and 1:09:55 in the 15-kilometer race. Thomas Rizza completed the 6.6-kilometer event in 33:12, the one-kilometer sprint in 5:06, and the 15-kilometer event in 1:14:53. After the weekend, Cummings finished in 17th place, just ahead of Rizza in 18th place.
As a team, Castleton finished in third place with 91 points, qualifying for the national event. Among teams eligible for the national meet, Clarkson finished first with 18 points, followed by Maine-Farmington with 80 points, the Spartans, and Cornell with 106 points.
Castleton will head to Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Ore., for the USCSA Nordic National Championships March 7-11.
