CHITTENDEN, Vt. – Thanks to top-20 finishes by two newcomers, the Castleton University maintained its spot in the team standings, finishing in third place after Sunday's seven-kilometer classical race of the Castleton Invitational, held at the Mountain Top Nordic Center.
Freshman Devin Perry once again led the Spartans, finishing in fourth place overall with a time of 22:17, just one second behind third-place finisher Ben Anderson of Cornell. Fellow first-year skier David Harvey finished in 16th place with a time of 23:59.
Keegan Cummings finished in 41st place overall with a time of 31:13, just ahead of teammate Thomas Rizza, who ended up in 42nd place after posting a mark of 32:29. For the second straight day, Charlie Maitland of Clarkson won the event, blistering the course with a time of 20:23, over one minute ahead of his nearest competitor.
As a team, Castleton completed the weekend with 62 points, behind team champion Clarkson with 24 points and Vermont with 40 points. The Spartans finished just ahead of Cornell, the fourth-place finisher with 70 points, followed by Paul Smith's College with 116 and Army West Point with 127 points.
The Castleton University men's Nordic ski team heads to Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y., next weekend for the Clarkson Invitational, to take place Jan. 28-29, 2017.
