CASTINE, Maine – Castleton University completed a sweep of its Maine weekend road trip, taking control in the second period and cruising to a 19-4 victory over Maine Maritime Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse game at Ritchie Field.
Maine Maritime (0-5, 0-2 NAC) scored twice in the first period on goals by Christopher Flaherty and Chase Whittemore to take a 2-1 lead with 5:50 remaining in the opening frame. Castleton pulled ahead for good on back-to-back man-up goals scored by Sam Siegel as well as a tally by Nik Rancourt.
The Spartans pulled away in the second period with eight unanswered goals, starting with Ryan Stone's second goal of the match 51 seconds into the period. After a man-up goal by Tom Pardew, Isaac Devoid scored consecutive goals, and Siegel scored twice more before halftime to help Castleton establish a 12-2 advantage.
Siegel would score the only goal of the third period, and then Castleton would continue the offensive pressure in the final quarter with six goals, including the first five in a row. Tyler Crowningshield notched a hat trick in the fourth period alone, while Connor Balestra contributed the first two goals of his collegiate career.
For the second straight game, Siegel collected five goals, plus he earned two assists for seven points. Stone finished with two goals and two assists, and Louis Alhage contributed a goal and three assists to the winning effort. Joshua Gosselin went 22-for-26 on faceoffs and collected 18 ground balls during the afternoon.
Whittemore led Maine Maritime with two goals, and Alex Grant-Roy earned two assists for the Mariners. John Stolz made six saves in net for Maine Maritime.
Castleton (4-3, 1-0 NAC) faces traditional rival New England College at Spartan Stadium Wednesday, March 29, at 4 p.m.
