Men’s Lacrosse Loses 2017 Season Opener to Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's lacrosse team fell to Plattsburgh State, 20-7, in the 2017 opener for both squads Wednesday at the Field House Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Plattsburgh State (1-0) jumped on the board just over one minute into the game on a goal by Bill Moller, but Castleton answered in the next minute, as Sam Siegel came from behind the net and shot the ball into the goal to tie the game. The Cardinals would pull out to a 4-1 lead, with Ryan Callahan scoring two goals less than one minute apart and then assisting on a goal by Jake Carroll.

Right after a Castleton faceoff win, Jason Sedell scored for the Spartans, and then Louis Alhage set up Isaac Devoid for a goal to close the Castleton deficit to 4-3. Ryan Hubbard closed out the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal, giving Plattsburgh State a 5-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of the game.

Sedell picked up his second goal of the match with 13:34 remaining in the second period to once again bring the Spartans within one. However, Plattsburgh State scored seven unanswered goals, four of the goals tallied by Hubbard with Callahan adding two goals and an assist, to extend the Cardinal lead to 12-4 at halftime.

The Spartans outscored the Cardinals in the third period, 3-2, thanks to goals by Tom Pardew, Siegel, and Peyton Faasse. However, Plattsburgh State would pull away with the victory thanks to six goals by six different players in the fourth quarter.

Siegel and Sedell finished with two goals apiece for the Spartans, while Alhage earned two assists. Faasse led Castleton with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Making his first start in goal for the Spartans, Brandon Myron collected a career-high 13 saves.

Callahan led Plattsburgh State with four goals and three assists for seven points, while Hubbard collected five goals during the game. Joe Eiseman earned a team-high five groundballs and was 10-for-13 on faceoffs, leading the Cardinals to an 18-12 advantage in faceoff wins.

Castleton (0-1) opens its home schedule next Tuesday, March 7, against Curry College starting at 4 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
